Meanwhile, the New York Mets made the biggest offseason improvement in players’ accumulated Box-Toppers points, while the San Diego Padres saw the biggest decline.

Players on the Dodgers current 2024 preseason roster (as of March 24) accumulated 127.7 Box-Toppers points during the 2023 season, most of any team.

The Dodgers rank ahead of the second-place Atlanta Braves with 122.6 points.

The top American League team, the Tampa Bay Rays, rank third overall. Players on the current 2024 preseason roster, accumulated 119.4 Box-Toppers points during the 2023 season.

Dodgers rank first

The Dodgers rise to first place after finishing third in 2023 Box-Toppers team rankings with 123.8 accumulated Box-Toppers points. The Dodgers had a net gain of 3.9 points for 2024.

The Dodgers had the biggest offseason acquisition, as measured by Box-Toppers points, signing free agent pitcher Shohei Ohtani from the Angels. Ohtani earned 19.4 Box-Toppers points in 2023, third among all players, second among American League pitchers and first among AL batters.

One major caveat with the Ohtani signing: He won’t be available to pitch in 2024 after undergoing elbow surgery in the offseason. The two-way player earned exactly half his 2023 Box-Toppers points as a pitcher (9.7) and half as a batter (9.7) with the Angels. Ohtani has been serving as Dodgers’ designated hitter in spring training games and is expected to play that position in 2024. But subtracting Ohtani’s potential as pitcher would reduce the Dodgers’ preseason point total to about 118, which would be about third overall and second among National League teams.

However, the Dodgers added another player in the offseason, like Ohtani from Japan, who has the potential to make up for Ohtani’s 2024 pitching absence—Yoshinobu Yamamoto. While Yamamoto, 25, has been a star in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball league—a three-time winner of the Eiji Sawamura Award for top NPB pitcher—he had yet to play American Major League Baseball prior to 2024, thus had 0.0 career Box-Toppers points and so does not add to the Dodgers’ preseason team total.

The Dodgers also signed pitcher Tyler Glasnow for 2024, who earned 12.4 Box-Toppers points in 2023 with the Rays, fourth-most among all players changing teams for 2024. Glasnow ranked 14th among AL pitchers in 2023.

One Dodgers player from 2023 has the most Box-Toppers points among currently unsigned free agents: Pitcher Julio Urias had 11.0 Box-Toppers points in 2023. Urias was placed on administrative leave late in the season and could still face punishment under baseball’s domestic violence policy if he signs with a new team.

One other prominent loss by the Dodgers: Designated hitter J.D. Martinez, who earned 6.7 Box-Toppers points in 2023, 17th among NL batters in 2023, who signed a free agent deal with the Mets.

Among top-ranked pitchers returning to the Dodgers in 2024 are Clayton Kershaw (11.1 Box-Toppers points, 14th among NL pitchers) and Bobby Miller (8.7 points, 24th among NL pitchers). Among top-ranked batters returning to the Dodgers are Freddie Freeman (10.0 points, third among NL batters), James Outman (8.7 points, seventh among NL batters), Mookie Betts (8.5 points, eighth among NL batters) and Jason Heyward (7.5 points, 13th among NL batters).

Several prominent Dodgers pitchers are expected to miss significant time recovering from injury, led by Ohtani, who is not expected to pitch until 2025. Kershaw is not expected to return until after midseason after undergoing shoulder surgery. Pitchers Tony Gonsolin (4.7 points in 2023) and Dustin May (3.0 points in 2023) will also miss time recovering from surgery.

Mets make biggest offseason gain

The New York Mets had the largest offseason gain, picking up a net of 32.6 Box-Toppers points from the end of 2023 to the 2024 preseason.

Biggest team gains & drops

The New York Mets picked up the most Box-Toppers points on its roster in the offseason (+32.6) while the San Diego Padres lost the most (-32.5). The Mets notably gained designated hitter J.D. • Pitcher Adrian Houser, 2.7 Box-Toppers points in 2023, 106th among NL pitchers, from the Brewers.

The Mets lost six players who earned Box-Toppers points with them in 2023, however, the biggest loss was designated hitter Daniel Vogelbach (3.0 points, with the Blue Jays in 2024) and the point total of the combined six players is 10.2 points.

Among players returning to the Mets for 2024 are Kodai Senga (12.7 Box-Toppers points, 10th among NL pitchers) and first baseman Pete Alonso (12.0 Box-Toppers points, first among NL batters).

About Box-Toppers

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.

Box-Toppers

Tracking who most helps their teams win the most games, based on box score stats. A method to measure & compare baseball's top players.

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. Players earn Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
