Texas Rangers rise to 1st, ending Tampa Bay Rays’ season-long lead atop team rankings

For the first time this season, the Tampa Bay Rays have fallen from first place in Box-Toppers team rankings, passed by the new leaders, the Texas Rangers.

Here are Box-Toppers 2023 team rankings through games of Thursday, July 20. The column BTP shows the number of Box-Toppers points players on the team accumulated this season. The column BTP/wk shows have many points teams accumulated from July 14 to July 20 . The column Wk ago shows the team's rank at the All-Star break.

Meanwhile, the Atlanta Braves continue to lead National League teams and the Milwaukee Brewers are the week’s hottest team.

Rangers rise to first

The Texas Rangers rise from third to first place this week with 74.6 Box-Toppers points, picking up 6.5 points in the past week since the All-Star break. They pass the Rays, who had led each of the first 14 weekly team rankings reports of 2023. The Rays fall to second overall with 73.7 Box-Toppers points, just 0.9 points behind the Rangers, picking up only 1.0 point in the past week. The Rangers lead over the top NL team, the Braves, by 4.2 points.

The Rangers have baseball’s fourth-best winning percentage (.598), behind the Braves (.653), the Baltimore Orioles (.615) and the Rays (.600). The Braves are third in Box-Toppers team rankings (70.4 points), the Orioles are fifth (68.3 points) and the Rays are second (73.7 points).

The Rangers are led by pitcher Nathan Eovaldi (9.7 Box-Toppers points, 12th among all players and sixth among AL pitchers). Rangers’ top batter is Marcus Semien (5.7 points, eighth among AL batters). There are 22 different Rangers players who have earned Box-Toppers points so far in 2023.

Braves lead National League teams

The Braves lead NL teams for the third week, falling from second to third place overall with 70.4 points, picking up 2.0 in the past week. The Braves rank ahead of the second-place NL team, the Los Angeles Dodgers (67.0 points, sixth overall).

The Braves have baseball’s best winning percentage (.653) and are led by pitcher Spencer Strider (12.7 points), second overall and first among NL pitchers. Top batter is Ronald Acuna Jr. (6.0 points), third among NL batters. There are 21 different Braves players who have earned Box-Toppers points so far in 2023.

Hottest team: Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers are the week’s hottest team, picking up 8.0 Box-Toppers points in the past week since the All-Star break, most of any team. They also have the biggest jump of any team, rising four spots from 14th to 10th place overall with 63.8 points.

Biggest decline: Yankees

The New York Yankees had the biggest decline among all teams in the past week, falling seven spots since the All-Star break from 11th to 18th place with 57.2 points, picking up 1.0 point in the past week.

Last place: Royals

The Kansas City Royals remain in 30th and last place in Box-Toppers team rankings for the second week with 26.0 Box-Toppers points, picking up a net 0.5 points in the past week (they earned 2.5 points during the week, but traded Mike Mayers to the White Sox, who earned 2.0 points in 2023).

Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. Players earn Box-Toppers points for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
