Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff (6IP 2H 2R BB 7K ND in the 6-5, 10-inning win over the Diamondbacks) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 20.8 for the season, rising from fifth to fourth place overall.

Woodruff ranks second overall among NL pitchers, behind Sandy Alcantara of the Marlins (21.1). Woodruff had the opportunity Monday to pass Alcantara and secure Box-Toppers NL Player of the Year honors if he earned 2.0 points as overall Player of the Day, giving him 21.8 points and an insurmountable lead among NL pitchers.

Woodruff is now guaranteed to finish either second or third among NL pitchers in 2022 Box-Toppers points. He could be passed by Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias (19.4), who starts Tuesday against the Rockies. Urias, currently fourth among NL pitchers, could rise to first place if he wins either 1.7 points as NL Player of the Day or 2.0 points as overall Player of the Day Monday. The only other NL pitcher who had a chance of rising to first place among NL pitchers in the season’s final week—Carlos Rodon of the Giants—is now not scheduled to start again this season. Rodon, third among NL pitchers with 19.8 points, was slated to start Tuesday, but reports indicate he has been shut down for the season’s final days.

Woodruff becomes the fifth player this season to reach 20.0 Box-Toppers points. It is his first season with 20.0 or more points. His previous best season was 2021 with the Brewers when he had 17.1 points, eighth overall and sixth among NL pitchers. With five players reaching 20.0 points, it is the most players with 20.0 or more points in a season since 2018, when there were six. The record is eight in 2017. Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.

Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Monday’s win over the Giants.

Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove (6IP 2H 0R 2BB 7K ND in the 7-4 win over the Giants) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 17.4 for the season, rising from 10th to ninth place overall, sixth among NL pitchers.

Debut—Two players made their Box-Toppers debut Monday, each with their first career Player of the Game honor:

  • Athletics pitcher Jared Koenig (4IP 0H 0R 0BB 3K ND in the 5-4, 10-inning win over the Angels) made his Major League debut June 8 and was playing in his 10th career game.

  • Pirates pitcher Yohan Ramirez (1IP 0H 0R 0BB 2K W in the 3-2 win over the Cardinals) made his Major League debut July 24, 2020, and was playing in his 70th career game.

Scoring—Nola earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Severino earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Waters earns 1.5 points for being AL Batter of the Day. All of Monday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
