About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

Also Monday, Astros pitcher Gerrit Cole regains the lead in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning American League Player of the Day honors. Cole regained the lead one day after losing it to teammate Justin Verlander.

Player of the Day—Syndergaard struck out 10 over seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits and no walks, in the 7-3 win over the Nationals.

Syndergaard earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 11.4 for the season, rising to 23rd place in season player rankings, 14th among National League pitchers.

Syndergaard becomes the 38th player to reach 10 Box-Toppers points in 2018. It is his third season with 10 or more points and his first since 2016. He had 10.4 points in 2015 with the Mets and 16.7 in 2016 with the Mets (his best season, when he ranked seventh among all players). He had 3.0 points in 2017 and 8.0 points in 2018, also with the Mets.

American League Player of the Day—Astros pitcher Gerrit Cole struck out 14 over six innings, allowing one run, three hits and two walks, in the 3-2, 10-inning win over the Brewers. Cole did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the Brewers tied the game after he exited.

Cole earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 24.2 for the season, rising from second to first in season player rankings, passing teammate Justin Verlander (23.8), who only took the lead again Sunday, pitching a no-hitter. It is the fourth time Cole has taken the lead from Verlander since July 22.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
