National League Player of the Day—Cardinals pitcher Jack Flaherty struck out seven over six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk, in the 2-1 win over the Pirates.

Longoria had a Box-Toppers game score Sunday of +3.0, same as Ender Inciarte of the Braves, who was Player of the Game in his team’s 5-4, 10-inning win over the Mets. Inciarte also had similar linescore to Longoria (3-4 2R 2BI), but Longoria ranked ahead, winning NL Batter of the Day honors, because he hit a home run and double while Inciarte’s hit a homer and a single.

Longoria also has now earned Box-Toppers points for 11 straight seasons after earning his first Player of the Game honor of 2018.

Longoria earned his first points in 2008 with the Rays and has 50.5 career points, 16th among active NL batters, third among active NL third basemen. His best season was 2009 with the Rays, when he had 8.5 Box-Toppers points, second among AL third basemen. In 2017, he had 2.0 points with the Rays.

Gray (8IP 4H R 2BB 8K ND in the 5-4, 11-inning win over the Brewers) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 9.7 for the season, 21st among all players and seventh among NL pitchers.

Scoring—Cahill earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Flaherty earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Trumbo and Longoria each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Sunday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
