Player of the Day—Scherzer had a perfect game through 8 2/3 innings when he hit a batter, allowing the game’s only baserunner, before retiring the final batter. Scherzer struck out 10 through nine innings, allowing no hits, runs or walks, in the 6-0 win over the Pirates.
Scherzer had a Box-Toppers game score Saturday of 19, which is the fourth-highest score for a Box-Toppers Player of the Game this season. He maintains his rank at fourth among all players since 1995 when Box-Toppers record keeping began. He trails third-place player Curt Schilling (194.1) and leads fifth-place player CC Sabathia (175.3).
