Reds' Cueto, top player for Tuesday, Sept. 23, becomes 5th player this season with 20 Box-Toppers points

Reds pitcher Johnny Cueto, Tuesday’s Player of the Day, becomes the fifth player this season with 20.0 or more Box-Toppers points.

Meanwhile Tuesday, two other pitchers—David Price of the Tigers and Zack Greinke of the Dodgers—rise in Box-Toppers player rankings. And two batters—Edwin Encarnacion of the Blue Jays and Adam LaRoche of the Nationals—rise in the top 10 in player rankings among their league’s batters.

Cueto rises from sixth to fifth place in Box-Toppers player rankings after earning Player of the Day honors Tuesday. (See the updated top 10 player list on the home page.) Cueto struck out seven over eight innings, allowing one run, in the 3-1 win over the Brewers. He earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points, giving him 21.4 for the season. He ranks third among National League pitchers in Box-Toppers points.

Price rises from ninth to eighth place in Box-Toppers player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Tuesday. (See the updated top 10 player list on the home page.) Price (8.2IP 8K ND in the 4-3 win over the White Sox) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 18.1 for the season. He ranks fourth among American League pitchers.

Greinke rises into Box-Toppers player rankings top 10, moving into 10th place, after earning Player of the Game honors Tuesday. (See the updated top 10 player list on the home page.) Greinke (8IP 5K W in the 4-2 win over the Giants) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 16.5 for the season. He ranks fifth among NL pitchers.

Encarnacion ranks fifth among AL batters after earning AL Batter of the Day honors Tuesday. Encarnacion homered and went 2-for-3, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 10-2 win over the Mariners. He earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being AL Batter of the Day, giving him 9.5 for the season. He ranks 58th among all players.

LaRoche rises to second place among NL batters after earning NL Batter of the Day honors Tuesday. LaRoche hit a three-run homer and went 2-for-3 in the 4-2 win over the Mets. He earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being NL Batter of the Day, giving him 8.2 for the season. He ranks second in NL batting behind Troy Tulowitzki of the Rockies (11.6). LaRoche ranks 76th among all players.

Rangers pitcher Nick Martinez is AL Player of the Day. Martinez pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings and struck out five in the 2-1 win over the Astros. This was Martinez’s Box-Toppers debut, the first time he has earned Player of the Game honors. He is the 3,430th player to debut in Box-Toppers since record keeping began in 1995. Martinez made his Major League debut on April 5 and was playing in his 27th game.

Notable: Marlins pitcher Henderson Alvarez rose to 14th place among NL pitchers after earning Player of the Game honors Tuesday. Alvarez (7.2IP 0R W in the 2-0 win over the Pirates) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 11.7 for the season. He ranks 36th among all players.

Cueto receives 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day. Martinez receives 1.7 for AL Player of the Day. Encarnacion and LaRoche each receive 1.5 for being top Batter of the Day in their league.

All of Tuesday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) receive 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
