Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer has more Box-Toppers points over the past two seasons than any other player.
Scherzer has earned 50.1 Box-Toppers points over 2017 and 2018. He ranked second among all players in both seasons:
In 2017, he had 25.0 Box-Toppers points, finishing behind Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale (25.1).
In 2018, he had 25.1 Box-Toppers points, finishing behind Rays pitcher Blake Snell (27.2).
It is the second straight year Scherzer has led players in the two-year Box-Toppers point total. In 2017, he had 50.7 Box-Toppers points over 2016 and 2017, holding a 3.2-point lead over second place player, Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw (47.5). While his combined total for 2017-18 is slightly less (50.1), his lead over this year’s second-place player, Sale (46.2), is slightly stronger, 3.9 points.
Sale, in second overall on the list and first among American League players, led all players in 2017 with 25.1 Box-Toppers points and ranked sixth in 2018 with 20.1.
Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw, who was second on the two-year list in 2017, falls to 11th place overall on the list with 31.1 Box-Toppers points, fifth among National League pitchers. Kershaw, who had led the two-year combined points list for four straight years from 2013 to 2016, but had a lackluster 2018. Kershaw earned just 8.0 Box-Toppers points in 2018, 73rd among all players and 34th among NL pitchers. In 2017, Kershaw ranked third among all players with 23.1 points.
That was the seventh straight season Kershaw earned 20 or more points, the longest such streak in Box-Toppers’ 24 season-tracking history. And it was also the seventh straight season Kershaw finished among the top three players overall.
Scherzer, the overall leader, also has a wide lead among NL pitchers on the two-year list. His 50.1 points is 14.2 points ahead of second-place NL pitcher, Aaron Nola of the Phillies (35.9).
Anthony Rizzo of the Cubs leads NL batters over the past two seasons with 25.5 Box-Toppers points. He led all batters in 2017 with 15.5 points and finished second among batters in 2018 with 10.0 (behind Christian Yelich of the Brewers with 11.5). Rizzo holds a commanding 8.8-point leader over second place batter over the past two seasons, Scooter Gennett of the Reds (16.7). Yelich, the 2018 points leader among NL batters, is third on the NL batters list with 16.5 points over the past two seasons.
Two key free agent batters this offseason are also among the top 10 NL batters over the past two seasons. Bryce Harper of the Nationals ranks sixth on the list with 14.5 points and Manny Machado of the Dodgers ranks 10th on the list with 12.7 points.
Giancarlo Stanton of the Yankees leads AL batters over the past two seasons with 20.7 Box-Toppers points. Stanton ranked second among NL batters in 2017 with 14.2 points when he was with the Marlins. He ranked 11th among AL batters in 2018 with the Yankees with 6.5 points.
Edwin Encarnacion, who played with the Indians the past two seasons, ranks second on the two-year list among AL batters with 18.6 Box-Toppers points. He led AL batters in 2017 with 12.1 points and ranked 12th in 2018 with 6.5.
J.D. Martinez of the Red Sox, who led AL batters in 2018 with 12.5 points, ranks third among AL batters on the two-year list with 18.0 points. Martinez earned 5.5 points in 2017 with the Tigers and Diamondbacks.
Rays pitcher Blake Snell, who led all players in 2018 with 27.2 Box-Toppers points, ranks 10th among all players and sixth among AL pitchers in points over the past two years with 32.2. Snell had 5.0 points in 2017, 54th among AL pitchers.
