Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Tuesday’s World Series Game 6.
The Los Angeles Dodgers win 3-1 to beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-2 in the best-of-seven game series, winning their first World Series since 1988.
Urias struck out four over the final 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing no hits, no walks and earning the save.
Urias had a Box-Toppers game score of +6.1, highest among all Dodgers players. It was his fourth Player of the Game honor of the 2020 postseason, most of any player. Urias was Player of the Game in the NL Wild Card Game 1 win over the Brewers on Sept. 30, in the NL Division Series Game 3 win over the Padres on Oct. 8 and in the NL Championship Series Game 7 win over the Braves on Oct. 18. This was Urias’s sixth appearance this postseason. He started in two of those appearances (including the World Series Game 4 loss on Oct. 24), however, all four of his Player of the Game honors were earned as a reliever.
Urias is one of 12 players to earn Player of the Game honors more than once. Teammate Corey Seager is the only other player to be named top player three times this postseason. Seager was named World Series Most Valuable Player. While Seager did not earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game in any World Series game, he was top player Oct. 7 in the NL Division Series Game 2 win over the Padres, Oct. 14 in the NL Championship Series Game 3 win over the Braves and Oct. 16 in the NLCS Game 5 win over the Braves.
Urias had 1.0 Box-Toppers point in the 2020 regular season, 315th among all players, 73rd among NL pitchers. Since the start of 2019, Urias has 7.0 Box-Toppers points, 168th among all players over 2019-20, 52nd among NL pitchers.
While the Dodgers and Rays had the best regular season winning percentages, the Dodgers far outranked the Rays in Box-Toppers team rankings. The Dodgers had the best winning percentage (.717) and the Rays were second (.667). But the Dodgers led all teams in 2020 Box-Toppers points with 52.8, while the Rays ranked ninth (fifth among American League teams) with 43.4 points.
While the Dodgers had only three more wins than the Rays (43 vs. 40), their players earned Box-Toppers bonus points more than twice as often in team wins. Dodgers players earned bonus points 15 times while Rays players did it only seven times.
The Dodgers were the top team in Box-Toppers team rankings for much of the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, ranking first in six straight weekly Box-Toppers team rankings, from Aug. 20 on, leading all teams at season’s end.
Tuesday’s Game 6 starter for the Dodgers, Tony Gonsolin had a Box-Toppers game score of -1.8 (1.2IP 3H R 2BB 4K ND). Dodgers reliever Victor Gonzalez, who picked up the win, had a game score of +4.1 (1.1IP 0H 0R 0BB 3K W). Dodgers top batter Tuesday was right fielder Mookie Betts with a game score of +1.0 (HR 2B 2-4 2R BI).
Rays starting pitcher Blake Snell had the best Box-Toppers game score of all players Tuesday of +10.1 (5.1IP 2H R 0BB 9K ND). He was cruising with 73 pitches when he was pulled by Rays manager Kevin Cash for reliever Nick Anderson, who immediately gave up a double, a wild pitch and within two batters, the Rays’ 1-0 lead. The Dodgers took a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning and held it, adding an insurance run on Betts’s eighth-inning solo homer. Anderson, who picked up the loss, had a Box-Toppers game score of -2.9 (0.1IP H R 0BB 0K L).
Randy Arozarena had the highest Box-Toppers game score (0.0) among Rays batters (HR 2-4 R BI). He gave the Rays the early lead hitting a first-inning solo homer. Arozarena was Box-Toppers Player of the Game in World Series Game 4 on Saturday.
