Blue Jays pitcher Kevin Gausman is Wednesday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day, rising to third place in season player rankings.
Gausman struck out 10 over six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and three walks, in the 6-1 win over the Yankees.
Gausman earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 18.7 for the season, rising from sixth to third in Box-Toppers season player rankings, behind Braves pitcher Spencer Strider (21.1) and Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani (19.4).
Gausman ranks second among American League pitchers behind Ohtani. However, Gausman has the most 2023 Box-Toppers points earned solely as an AL pitcher. Half of Ohtani’s points (9.7) were earned as a pitcher and the other half (9.7) were earned as a designated hitter.
National League Player of the Day
Lane Thomas of the Nationals hit a grand slam and went 1-for-2, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 13-3 win over the White Sox.
Thomas earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 3.7 for the season, 60th among NL batters.
American League Batter of the Day
Brandon Drury of the Angels hit two home runs, including a three-run shot, in the 8-3 win over the Rays. Drury went 3-for-5, scoring twice and driving in five runs.
Drury earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being AL Batter of the Day, giving him 5.5 for the season, 24th among AL batters.
National League Batter of the Day
There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Wednesday because the overall NL Player of the Day is batter Lane Thomas.
Nola reaches 100 career points
Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola became the 90th player to reach 100 career Box-Toppers points since player tracking began in 1995 after earning Player of the Game honors Wednesday.
Nola (6IP 6H 2R 0BB 8K ND in the 6-5, 10-inning win over the Braves) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 100.7 career points, 86th among all players since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995. With his 1.0 point, he passes five players on Box-Toppers’ “all-time” career points list—Jim Edmonds (99.8), Larry Walker (100.1), Jeff Bagwell (100.4), Paul Konerko (100.7) and Matt Cain (100.7). (Nola ranks ahead of Konerko and Cain because he has more 2023 points than those retired players.) Nola now trails 85th-ranked player Matt Holliday (100.8).
Nola now ranks 17th among active players in career points, ninth among active NL pitchers.
Nola is the second player to reach 100 career points in 2023 after Braves pitcher Charlie Morton did it Aug. 16. Morton was the first player to reach 100 points in more than two years and now has 104.1 career points, 78th-most since 1995.
Nola now has 11.0 Box-Toppers points in 2023, 28th among all players and 14th among NL pitchers.
Notable
Diamondbacks pitcher Merrill Kelly now has 13.0 Box-Toppers points in 2023—15th overall and seventh among NL pitchers—after earning 1.0 point as Player of the Game Wednesday (6.2IP 3R H 3BB 5K W in the 7-1 win over the Giants).
Also notable
Tyrone Taylor of the Brewers earns Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors for the second straight day Wednesday.
Taylor (2HR 2-4 2R 2BI in the 8-2 win over the Cardinals) was also Player of the Game Tuesday in the 7-3 win over the Cardinals (2B 1-3 2R BI). He earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point in each of the two days, giving him 5.0 for the season, 33rd among NL batters.

About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
