Major League Baseball ruled in early October that the Mets were winners in the game, even though the Marlins led 2-1 when it was suspended in the top of the ninth inning. But the Mets were declared winners since they led at the end of the final complete inning—New York led 1-0 after eight innings.

The Marlins took the lead in the top of the ninth when the game was suspended. Had the game figured into postseason qualifying, the game was scheduled to be resumed the Monday following the end of the regular season, Oct. 2. Since the game no longer had postseason implications, it was not completed.

But with baseball’s ruling that the Mets were 1-0, eight-inning winners, the game was not included among games finished on Thursday, Sept. 28, but rather on Monday, Oct. 2, when it would have been concluded, making it that day’s only game—even though no part of it was played on that day.

So that makes Peterson not only Player of the Game in this win over the Marlins, it makes him overall Player of the Day for Monday, Oct. 2.

Peterson struck out eight over seven scoreless innings, allowing four hits and four walks. He did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the game was in a scoreless tie when he exited.

Peterson earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 3.0 for the season, 318th among all players and 90th among National League pitchers.

Had this game been completed on its scheduled date, Thursday, Sept. 28, with the same 1-0, eight-inning Mets win over the Marlins, Peterson would only have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point as Player of the Game and would not have earned any bonus Box-Toppers points. While he had a +7.0 Box-Toppers game score, the same as the day’s NL Player of the Day, Brewers pitcher Julio Teheran, Peterson would have ranked behind him, since Peterson did not pick up a decision while Teheran earned the win in his game. Interestingly, Marlins starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo had a game-best +10.1 Box-Toppers game score (7.1IP 4H R BB 10K L) and picked up the loss. In reality, it was a game the Marlins were leading in the ninth inning, even though on paper and by rule, the Marlins lost. Luzardo ended up finishing fifth overall in 2023 Box-Toppers points with 17.8, second among NL pitchers. Had Luzardo earned NL Player of the Day or overall Player of the Day for his performance—which were highly probable given the Marlins’ lead—he could have had as many as 19.8 Box-Toppers points on the season, boosting him as high as third overall, behind Braves pitcher Spencer Strider (21.1) and Blue Jays pitcher Chris Bassitt (20.1), still second among NL pitchers.

Major League Baseball declared this an official game after eight innings. That means that any statistics recorded in the top of the ninth inning are wiped from the record books. That run Bryan De La Cruz scored to tie the game, which would have been his 61st for the season and 116th for his career? Didn’t happen. He has 60 for 2023 and 115 for his career.

Only the eighth inning run by the Mets counts in the official records. The Marlins scored two runs in the top of the ninth before the game was suspended by rain. Since it didn’t need to be completed because the results no longer had playoff implications, it was ruled an official game after eight innings. That made it a 1-0 Mets win, even though the Marlins were leading 2-1 when rain suspended the game.

Here is a description of what happened in that now phantom top of the ninth inning, from Christina De Nicola, who covers the Marlins for MLB.com:

“Trailing 1-0 in the ninth, Bryan De La Cruz led off with a single before Garrett Hampson struck out against righty Grant Hartwig. Southpaw Anthony Kay entered to face left-handed-hitting Jazz Chisholm Jr. and threw a wild pitch that advanced De La Cruz to second. As rain fell harder, Chisholm lined a game-tying RBI double off the left-field wall and pinch-hitter Yuli Gurriel followed with the go-ahead RBI single to left. Xavier Edwards flied out and Jon Berti singled against Reed Garrett before the umpiring crew called for the tarp.”

The completion of this, the 2,430th and final game of the season, will insubstantially alter the final Box-Toppers season player rankings and have a small effect on the Mets final standings in Box-Toppers team rankings, moving them up from 26th to 25th place overall.

Very lightly revised final player rankings, mostly to update total Player of the Game winners and total Box-Toppers points awarded with Peterson’s additional 2.0 points.

Box-Toppers final team rankings report revised with Mets in 25th place with Peterson’s additional 2.0 points.

Scoring

  • Peterson earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day.

  • Peterson is the day’s only Player of the Game winner (listed in the chart).
