Also Friday, Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer failed to retake the Box-Toppers player rankings lead after he did not earn Player of the Game honors in his start, a win over the Phillies. That gives Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale the chance to take the lead in his start Saturday against the Rays.

Player of the Day—Clevinger struck out seven over six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and three walks, in the 5-0 win over the Orioles.

Clevinger earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 10.4 for the season. He ranks 22nd among all players and seventh among American League pitchers.

This is Clevinger’s first 10-point season. He made his Box-Toppers debut in 2016 when he had 3.0 points with the Indians.

This is the third day in a row an Indians pitcher has earned Box-Toppers Player of the Day honors. On Wednesday, Carlos Carrasco was Player of the Day and on Thursday, Corey Kluber was Player of the Day. The Indians have now won 16 games in a row.

National League Player of the Day—Michael Taylor of the Nationals hit an inside-the-park grand slam and tripled in the 11-10 win over the Phillies. Taylor went 4-for-5, scoring twice and driving in five runs.

American League Batter of the Day—Marcus Semien of the Athletics hit a grand slam and went 2-for-5, scoring twice, in the 9-8 win over the Astros.

National League Batter of the Day—There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Friday because the overall NL Player of the Day is batter Michael Taylor.

Box-Toppers points leader race—Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer had the chance to take the season Box-Toppers points lead Friday but did not earn Player of the Game honors in his team’s win against the Phillies.

Scherzer is ranked second in 2017 Box-Toppers points with 23.0, behind Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw (23.1). Had he earned Player of the Game honors (worth 1.0 Box-Toppers points), he would have taken the lead. But Scherzer (6IP 6H 4R 3BB 7K W in the 11-10 win) had a Box-Toppers game score of -4.0. Player of the Game was teammate Michael Taylor (who was also NL Player of the Day) with a Box-Toppers game score of +6.0.

Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale (22.1 Box-Toppers points, ranked third) has the chance to take the season Box-Toppers points lead Saturday in his start against the Rays. Sale would need to earn AL Player of the Day (worth 1.7 points) or overall Player of the Day (worth 2.0 points) to pass Kershaw to take the lead. Sale leads AL pitchers in 2017 Box-Toppers points.

Notable—Brewers pitcher Jimmy Nelson has the most 2017 Box-Toppers points among the 15 who earned Player of the Game honors Friday.

Nelson (5IP 4H 0R 2BB 7K W in the 2-0 win over the Cubs) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 14.0 for the season. He ranks 13th among all players and seventh among NL pitchers.

Also notable—Elvis Andrus of the Rangers now has 11.0 Box-Toppers points on the season after earning Player of the Game honors Friday.

Andrus (2-2B 3-4 R 3BI in the 11-5 win over the Yankees) ranks second among AL batters, behind Edwin Encarnacion of the Indians (12.1). He ranks 20th among all players. He has earned 3.5 Box-Toppers points so far in September.

Top 10 watch—Twins pitcher Ervin Santana (14.4 Box-Toppers points in 2017, ranked 10th) did not earn Player of the Game honors in his team’s win Friday.

Santana (5IP 5H 4R BB 3K W in the 8-5 win over the Royals) had a Box-Toppers game score of -6.0. Player of the Game was teammate Eddie Rosario (HR 2-4 R 4BI) with a Box-Toppers game score of +3.0.

Scoring—Clevinger earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Taylor earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Semien earns 1.5 points for being AL Batter of the Day. All of Friday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
