BTP: Box-Toppers points
List of top 100 players since 1995 as of July 30, 2017.

Scherzer (7IP 5H 2R 2BB 9K ND in the 3-2 win over the Marlins) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 21.0 for the season. He maintains his second-place spot in Box-Toppers season player rankings, behind overall leader Kershaw (22.1).

Scherzer could pass Kershaw on his next start, if he earns overall Player of the Game (worth 2.0 points, giving him 23.0 for the season) or NL Player of the Day honors (worth 1.7 points, giving him 22.7).

Very similar to 2016, Scherzer trailed Kershaw’s commanding lead. But after Kershaw went on the disabled list in 2016, as he has this season, Scherzer eventually caught and passed him. In 2016, Scherzer passed Kershaw on Aug. 25 when he reached 20.7 Box-Toppers points. Scherzer went on to top players in 2016 Box-Toppers points with 25.7, ahead of Kershaw’s 24.4.

Scherzer now has 152.7 career Box-Toppers points and rises to 18th place among all players in career points since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. With his point Monday, he passes Cubs pitcher Jon Lester (151.9) on the “all-time: list and now trails 17th-ranked player Barry Bonds (153.2). (It should be noted that Bonds would have more career Box-Toppers points if his entire career from 1986 were tracked. Rough projections put his career Box-Toppers point total at about 230.)

Top 10 watch—Twins pitcher Ervin Santana (14.4 Box-Toppers points, ranked fourth) did not earn Player of the Game honors Monday in the 5-4 win over the Brewers.

Santana (6IP 6H 4R 2ER BB 6K ND) had a Box-Toppers game score of -1.0. Teammate Jorge Polanco earned Player of the Game (and AL Batter of the Day honors) with a Box-Toppers game score of +2.0.

Scoring—Williams earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Bundy earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Votto and Polanco each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Monday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
